How to Open a Business Bank Account in Alberta: What You Need Before Your First Appointment

Setting up a dedicated business bank account is one of the most exciting milestones for any new entrepreneur in Alberta. It draws a clear line between personal and business finances, protects your personal liability, and makes tax season significantly easier.

However, walking into a bank branch without the right paperwork is one of the quickest ways to hit a wall. Major financial institutions—like RBC, TD, Scotiabank, ATB Financial, and BMO—are legally required to verify that your business is properly registered with the Province of Alberta and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) before opening an account.

If you are getting ready to open your commercial account, here is exactly what you need to have in hand.

1. A Registered Business Name (or Articles of Incorporation)

Banks will not allow you to deposit checks or accept digital payments under a business name that doesn't legally exist on paper.

Sole Proprietors & Partnerships: If you operate under any name other than your exact legal personal name, Alberta law requires you to register a Trade Name (also known as a DBA or "Doing Business As"). Your bank will require a copy of your official Declaration of Trade Name.

Incorporated Businesses: If you run an Alberta corporation, you must bring your Articles of Incorporation, Certificate of Incorporation, and your Notice of Directors.

Why this matters: When a customer writes a check or sends an Interac e-Transfer to "Your Business Name," your bank can only accept those funds if that exact name is linked to your account via official provincial registry records.

2. A Federal Business Number (BN) from the CRA

Your Business Number (BN) is a unique 9-digit identifier assigned by the Canada Revenue Agency. It acts as your business’s federal tax ID.

Banks ask for your BN during the account setup process to comply with federal financial regulations and anti-money laundering (AML) laws. It also links your corporate bank account to your future CRA tax accounts, such as GST/HST, corporate income tax, or payroll deductions.

3. Standard Personal Identification & Supporting Documents

In addition to your provincial and federal registration paperwork, bring the following to your bank appointment:

  • Two pieces of government-issued ID: At least one must be a valid photo ID (Driver’s License, Passport, or Permanent Resident Card) for every owner or signatory on the account.
  • Operating Agreement / Partnership Agreement: Required if you have business partners or multiple corporate directors.
  • Initial Deposit Funds: Most business accounts require an opening deposit (typically $50–$100).
